When I finished my studies in 2007, all I knew was that I wanted to “work online”. It was a different time then; “purely digital” career opportunities were non-existent, only students were on Facebook, online gaming was just starting to register on people’s radars, and people thought I worked with intellectual property rights when I said I did “a bit of copywriting”.
Fresh out of university, I was hired by a company that was focused purely online, and I learned more practical skills in my first month working there than I did in three full years of lectures.
I also learned that this is definitely 100% what I want to keep doing; planning, setting up, managing, and advising on digital marketing and online strategy.
15+ years have passed since then, and in that time I went from being employed, to going solo as a copywriter, to running a team of writers, to managing a full service digital agency with a varied retinue of clients.
Even now, as the captain of my own ship, I’m not happy with just steering – I want to be in the engine room, working with my team, setting strategies with clients, keeping it firing on all cylinders, but never over revving.
It’s been a journey with many lessons, but one thing stays true; even on my worst days, I’ve always chased after excellence. Do the thing and do it right, I believe. There is a good and proper way to do things, and there are shoddy ways too, but every day, I have done my best to always do my best.
