About

15+ years in digital marketing

When I finished my studies in 2007, all I knew was that I wanted to “work online”.

It was a different time; purely digital careers were basically science fiction, only university students were on Facebook, and people thought I worked in intellectual property when I mentioned copywriting.

Fresh out of university, I was hired by a company that was focused purely online, and I learned more in my first month there than in three full years of lectures.

I also learned that this is definitely 100% what I want to keep doing; planning, setting up, managing, and advising on digital marketing and online strategy.

15+ years later, I’ve gone from solo copywriter, to running a content operation, to steering a full-service, remote-first digital agency based in Malta. These days, I work directly with founders, C-levels, and B2B brands who need someone who’s been in the room, and who knows what to say when they get there..

One thing has never changed: even on my worst days, I’ve always chased after excellence. Do the thing, and do it right. There’s a proper way to do this, and there are shortcuts, and I’ve always chosen the former.

I’ve been there and done that, both in boardrooms (in a suit), and in startups (in flip flops and bermuda shorts). I started businesses, built them, closed them and sold them, and it wasn’t all champagne and big wins.

Mammoth organisations, government agencies, scrappy startups with more ambition than budget — I’ve worked with them all, and I get that what a founder needs at 11pm on a Tuesday is very different from what a C-level needs before a board meeting on Thursday morning.

These days, my work sits at the intersection of communications, content, and digital presence. I work with founders who need to build authority, executives who need to be visible for the right reasons, and B2B brands who are tired of marketing that looks busy but does nothing.

My job is simple in theory and sometimes difficult in practice: understand your goal, understand what success looks like to you, and translate all of that into something that actually gets delivered, and then, that actually works.

At heart, I am a generalist with a solid working knowledge of most things relating to digital marketing. In fact, I pride myself on being able to do everything that everyone on my team does (though obviously, they’re all more specialised than I am in their area.)

This has advantages, as I can understand what everyone in the team is supposed to do, and it’s also why I have a team around me of trusted people I’ve worked with for years, on dozens of projects, and who are tried, tested, and battle hardened.

In a space drowning in consultants who talk a big game and deliver very little, 15+ years of real experience is the difference — and is the reason why I readily admit that I’m salty in 3 ways.
