I asked a few clients a slightly uncomfortable question recently.

Not about performance or results — but about perception.

I’d heard Simon Alexander Ong talk about UTPs (Unique Talking Points) at an FPEI event; these are the things people remember about you and talk about when you’re not in the room.

That’s where the pic of this post is from, BTW.

So I asked clients and friends what they thought my UTPs were — because if you’re too close to your own work, you’re often the worst judge of it.

One response I got really stuck with me:

  • That I’m straight with people.
  • That I don’t play games.
  • That clients don’t feel the need to “sanity-check” me with a second opinion.
  • And that I say what needs to be said — clearly, firmly, but without ego or nonsense. “No BS, but coated in velvet” were the exact words.

I’ll take that.

Very grateful to have clients who are honest, thoughtful, and willing to take time to answer awkward questions.
