I finally found the resignation email I used when I quit my government job

I finally found the resignation email I sent when I quit my government job – and I lied to you.

It was longer than 2 lines.

Since I’ve been reliving my experiences of working, or rather, quitting, my government agency job, I have been repeatedly asked to share the text of the email that I sent when I resigned.

And I have a confession to make.

The years have not been kind to me and I misremembered, or rather forgot, that my resignation email was not, in fact, only 2 lines long.

The effective part of the resignation letter is 2 lines long – that much is correct. The rest is housekeeping, but taken holistically, apologies, I’ve been telling you porky pies.

Whatever.

Here it is in all its almost-unredacted glory:

14 April 2011
(My Direct Manager’s Name)
Name of Department Manager
Government Agency Name
Address Line 1,
Address Line 2,
Malta

Dear Mr ________,

I am writing to notify you that I am resigning from my position as Copywriter with _______. My last day of employment will be Thursday 28th of April 2011.

I would like to give 2 weeks resignation notice period, worked out as one week of leave and one week for handovers. Kindly note that my last day of work prior to my leave was Monday the 21st of March 2011.

Given that I have already been paid for the month of March, I would like to avail of my owed leave of 6 days to complete the month of March. I will then come back into work for the last week of April to complete my obligatory resignation period. I would suggest that my current leave would be considered as unpaid leave.

If the above is acceptable, and for simplicity’s sake, I would suggest that I am not paid for the month of April, as this way nothing would be owed by either party.

Thank you for the opportunities for growth that you have provided me.

If I can be of assistance during this transition, please let me know.

Sincerely yours,

Mark Debono

NB: I think that in my haste to write this resignation email, I actually should have said “to complete the month of April”, not March.

Whatever.

Let me tell you; the month I wrote wasn’t the sticking point of this resignation letter, LOL.
